Marc D. Hansen

I received my Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and my B.S. in Biology from Stanford University. My main interest is developing applications that make it easier for people to understand and explore information. To that end, I have created visualizations and user interfaces as well as flexible systems to support these interfaces. For my dissertation, I conducted a domain analysis of visual data query systems.

As a software engineer in the MineSet , Data Mining and Visualization group at SGI (recently acquired by PurpleInsight), I developed a plug-in architecture for visualization tools, as well as a communications infrastructure that enabled users to perform visual data mining via a direct-manipulation interface. This communication system was used to develop an interactive decision tree tool that passed XML messages between client- and server-side plugins.
